Guest Lecturer: Goro Murayama (Contemporary Artist)

On December 9th, we invited contemporary artist Dr. Goro Murayama to speak at the "Innovation and Art" course (taught by Adjunct Lecturer Kazuhide Hasegawa). He gave a lecture on the theme of "Exploring the Sources of Creativity."

Based on his new book, Lectures on Art Production Theory at the University of Tokyo (Film Art Inc.), Dr. Murayama explained his unique approach using the production process of his signature series, "Woven Paintings," as a case study. He discussed how he "deconstructs existing frameworks (the canvas) and redesigns the process itself."

Particularly insightful for the business context was his perspective on "emergence from errors." He explained that errors in the production process should not be viewed merely as failures; rather, they can serve as a starting point to transform the process and generate new value that exceeds initial assumptions. This "skill of making unintended errors your ally" touches upon the very core of innovation creation.

He also shared practical experiments designed to draw out creativity, such as idea generation methods utilizing the gap between AI and human cognition, and "micro-emergence," which involves combining heterogeneous elements. The lecture provided a valuable opportunity for students to acquire fresh perspectives.
